Federal agents on Thursday rounded up more than 100 suspected illegal immigrants working at a construction site in Schuylkill County. The raid took place near Minersville, where a Wal-Mart distribution center is being built.
On Thursday morning, agents from the Bureau of Citizenship and Immigration, along with State Police and members of the Schuylkill County Sheriff's office, arrived at the construction site in the High Ridge Business Park. They were looking for suspected illegal immigrants.
120 people were taken into custody. That amounts to about half the work force at the construction site. They were put on busses and taken to a processing area. The government will determine what will be done with the workers from there.
Workers not involved in the raid were sent home. "They shut us down until they get enough information that everyone is a U.S. citizen," said Ted Hardy of Girardville. "They told us to go home."
Wal-Mart says it's not responsible for the illegals because those arrested were contractors and not Wal-Mart employees. The name of the construction company that hired the workers has not been released. Investigators say the company will probably be questioned by the agents as to how the undocumented workers got their jobs.
